These notes may help readers identify people featured in the illustrations or explain some of the references that might not be familiar to those outside the US.

George Wallace was a long-running Governor of Alabama and sought the Democratic Party nomination for president several times, all on a staunch manifesto of segregation.

William Marrion Branham was an American Christian minister and faith healer who claimed to be a prophet who had come to prelude Christ’s second coming. He made a lasting influence on televangelism while facing charges of fraud and tax evasion. He was baptised and ordained a minister by the Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, to whom he remained close throughout his life.

In 1968 surgeons in Virginia stopped life support for Bruce Tucker, an African American man, removed his heart and transplanted it into Joseph Klett, a white man. None of this was done with the consent of Tucker or his family. A legal battle followed that revealed the level of racism and segregation that extended into the healthcare system.
